Dia de los Muertos Parade, Mission District
Sunday night, three days after Halloween, was one of the great San Francisco traditions, the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Parade in the Mission District. This community event is more than 30 years old and this year drew around 15,000 people. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to walk in the candle-lit parade. Many who attend whiten their faces and bring flowers in a ritual to honor their ancestors. The event also celebrates the vitality and richness of the Latino community. Along the parade route were a number of small memorials featuring candles and photos of the departed being remembered. The parade ended at Garfield Park where five local artists built large scale altars as a celebration honoring both death and the cycle of life.
