Remembering Harvey Milk
With the Gus Van Sant film coming out there is a lot of renewed national interest in the life of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk. Motivated by the 1978 Briggs Initiative, a California proposition to ban gays and lesbians from working in California's public schools, Milk became the country's first openly gay person elected to public office as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. I'll present no movie spoilers in this post but I do want to highlight a few of the city's memorials to Milk. Pictured above is Harvey Milk Plaza the Castro Street terminal for the Muni Metro and the recently unveiled bust of Harvey in City Hall. In addition, a school in the Castro District bears his name.
