Living the High Life in San Francisco
San Franciscans, and Californians in general, don't have basements. Instead city dwellers often have a rooftop terrace. In apartments the roof is shared by all the tenants and in condos the roof area is often sold as part of the penthouse. Like the hidden backyard garden, San Francisco's terraces can be private hideaways with sunbathing decks, barbecues, and even rooftop gardens.

In fact a great terrace view is often one of the biggest selling points for a home in San Francisco. I once lived in the Marina and would watch the city's Fourth of July, Crissy Field fireworks show from my rooftop. What made those evenings special, besides the view, was that as far as you could see in every direction my fellow San Franciscans were laughing, eating, and toasting each other from rooftop to rooftop.
