Rosie the Riveter Monument, Richmond
In October of 2000 the City of Richmond unveiled this monument to the estimated 18 million women worked defense industries and support services during WWII. These women were fondly referred to as 'Rosie the Riveter' after an illustration by Norman Rockwell and later by a song of the same title. This monument is located on the site of the Richmond's Kaiser Shipyard Number 2, one of the largest and most productive shipyards of the war.

In the West Coast shipyards 25% of all workers were women, in other wartime factories they averaged 80%. By 1945 those production workers earned a weekly wage of $47.08, nearly twice their 1940 pay before the war. After the war ended, nearly all the women lost their jobs to the returning soldiers and sailors. The dedication of this monument was attend by over 200 'Rosies.'
