August in the City
Surprisingly August in San Francisco brings some of the city's most pleasant weather. The monthly temperatures average 65 degrees with almost never any rain. The city's unique geographic location, topography, and maritime surroundings combine for a climate of mild, moist winters and dry summers. This unusually temperate climate is only found here, on the western coast of Chile, southwest tip of Africa, west coast of Australia, and the Mediterranean Sea.

However by measuring temperature, fog, and wind, meteorologists have identified five vastly different microclimates in the city. San Franciscans know that while it may be sunny and warm when they walk out their front door, just a couple miles away it might be gray, windy and cold.

San Francisco's first meteorologist was Thomas Tennant, a Philadelphia Quaker who tracked and recorded the city's weather beginning in 1849. Tennant, a maker of nautical and mathmatical instruments, would eventually serve on the city's Board of Supervisors and design the street layouts for all of San Francisco west of Larken Street.
