From this lower floor apartment in 1995 WELL user Craig Newmark put together a Usenet list to help promote San Francisco events and aid people find apartments. As the list grew Newmark wrote some software and developed www.craigslist.org. Word of mouth about the useful ultra stripped-down site led to rapid growth and it expanded rapidly. By 1999 Newmark was working on his web site full time, eight years later Craigslist had grown to a staff of 24 and had relocated to its headquarters in San Francisco's Sunset District. Today Craigslist includes listings for 450 cities and more than 50 countries. Craigslist charges fees only for job ads and broker apartment listings, nevertheless the estimated annual earnings for the simple web site that started out of this apartment were $150 million last year.
