Looking Out Beyond San Francisco
San Francisco has a special relationship with sixteen international cities which have been designated 'Sister Cities.' These cities were selected because they are economic centers of commerce and experienced in global trade. Geographically these cities are similar to San Franciso, each located near the ocean and with natural harbors or ringed by hills. San Francisco actively engages in cultural exchange and business development with her sister cities.

These sister cities are Abijan, Ivory Coast; Assisi, Italy; Bangalore, India; Caracas, Venezuela; Cape Town, South Africa; Cork, Ireland; Estelli, Nicaragua; Haifa, Israel; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Manila, Philippines; Osaka, Japan; Paris, France; seoul, South Korea; Shanghai, China; Sydney, Australia; Taipei, Republic of China (Taiwan): Thessaloniki, Greece; and Zürich, Switzerland. The oldest relationship is with Osaka, 51 years and the newest is Bangalore, less than one year.
