Mini Series, Bay to Breakers Race- Day 1 of 2
Saturday was the 97th annual Bay to Breakers Race in San Francisco. It is sometimes called the longest party in the world as it begins on the city's eastern bay shore and ends on its western ocean shore, 7.46 miles later. The race started in 1912 as a way to lift the city's spirits after the Great Earthquake and Fire. It held the distinction as the highest participation foot race (110,000 runners) until 1994. The Bay to Breakers Race is also famous for its 'Centipede Racers', teams consisting of at least 13 runners tethered together (see above). Also pictured above is this year's race winner #16, John Korir of Kenya. Korir's countrywoman, Lineth Chepkurui captured the women's crown.
