Novartis/Chiron, Emeryville
The huge Chiron Life Science Center dominates the landscape of Emeryville directly across the Bay from San Francisco. The colorful structure, built in 1999, centers the biotech company's sprawling campus. Founded by three professors in 1981, Chiron eventually grew into a $2 billion company as the second-largest flu vaccines provider and the fifth-largest vaccines business in the world. In 2003 an animal rights group calling itself the Revolutionary Cells exploded two pipe bombs filled with an ammonium nitrate and nails inside this building to protest Chiron's relationship with a New Jersey-based animal testing contractor. No one was injured in either of the two explosions and in April of 2006 Chiron was purchased by Biotech giant, Novartis Vaccines and Pharmaceuticals.
