Central Pump Station, Sunset District
If you drive along Sloat Avenue near Stern Grove you'll see a huge building adorned with high reliefs by famed sculpture, Willis Polk. The striking building, built in 1911, features a tableau of two full-length female figures flank an elaborately ornamented center medallion as well as other sculpture. The building is not a museum but a municipal pumping station. The Central Pump Station provides about 60 per cent of the water to the Sunset District. The pump station is currently undergoing a $9 million seismic retrofit and equipment upgrade. Along with the upgrade, the grounds of the pumping station will receive a major landscaping redesign. The project is expected to be finished this year.
