Flood Building, Market Street
One of the landmark buildings in San Francisco is the Flood Building on Market Street. It was built in 1905 by James L. Flood to honor his father, James C. Flood, one of the city's wealthy silver-mining Bonanza Kings. The building is still owned by the Flood family and the current Mr. Flood still comes to his office in the building on a regular basis.

The brick and Colusa sandstone Beaux Arts building was designed to resemble those on Paris' grand boulevards and give the new city an imperial grandeur. The twelve-story flatiron building, which sits on one of San Francisco's busiest corners, was completed right before the Great Earthquake and Fire and had to be restored within a year of completion.

In 1921 renowned literary gumshoe Dashiell Hammett (The Maltese Falcon) worked in office 314 of the Flood Building as a private detective for the Pinkerton Agency. Today the Flood Building houses over 250 tenants including several consulates, a significant number of non-profit organizations, and the Gap flagship store.
