Blackie's Pasture, Tiburon
Off Highway 101's Tiburon exit is a waterfront park called Blackie's Pasture. The park commemorates an old swaybacked former cavalry and rodeo horse, Blackie. The beloved old horse spent his 28 retirement years in the pasture, being fed carrots and sugar cubes by Marin county school children. When Blackie died he was buried in the pasture and this bronze statue was erected by locals who missed the old horse. Today the park anchors one end of a stunning 2 1/2 mile strip of outdoor trails for walking, running and biking with magnificent views of the Bay and San Francisco. The trails end in beautiful downtown Tiburon. In April of last year Blackie's statue was visited by a statue of another famous local horse, Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit's statue was being delivered to the city of Willits by the Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation. If you are interested in learning more about Blackie there is a children's book that tells the story of the beloved horse.
