Mini Series, California Dreaming, Day 3 of 3
In-N-Out was California's first drive-thru hamburger stand and remains one of the state's most popular fast food restaurants. Dating back to 1948, it was opened by Harry and Esther Snyder and was soon followed by Whataburger (1950), Burger King (1954), and McDonald's (1955). Its legion of vocal fans have ranged from Bob Hope and Julia Child to Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise. When Sergeant Andrew Ramirez, a POW for a month in Serbia, was released, his first request was for an In-N-Out Double-Double.

The restaurant's limited food menu (hamburgers, cheeseburgers and fries) can be augmented by the non-posted, secret menu that devotees know to order. In-N-Out offers more benefits to its employees than other food franchises with a starting wage $2 above the California minimum and $4 the national minimum wage. The company's 200-plus locations in California, Nevada and Arizona remain privately owned by the Snyder family.
