Klussman Memorial Turnaround, Aquatic Park
In 1947 San Francisco Mayor Roger Lapham and the city's chamber of commerce announced plans to shut down the city's cable car system because it was too impractical and expensive. Outraged, a citizen's commitee led by a woman named Friedel Klussman fought to keep the historic cable cars. Under Klussman's direction the committee met with consultants and mechanics to prove that the cable cars were viable. They then collected 50,000 signatures, enough to put the issue on the ballot. As Friedel put it, "who comes to San Francisco to ride the bus?" The issue passed and San Francisco maintained the country's last cable car line and America's only mobile National Monument. This turnaround near Fisherman's Wharf was named in her honor.
