United Nations Plaza, Civic Center
San Francisco was the birthplace of the United Nations. In April, 1945 during the last months of World War II 50 nation's representatives gathered here and held their opening sessions at the War Memorial Opera house. There was a considerable push to keep the U.N. located in San Francisco but many European nations thought it too far away so the permanent site was moved to New York City. Today this 2.6 acre pedestrian mall serves to memorialize the U.N. charter signing at the nearby Herbst Theater. The plaza features fountains and carved obelisks bearing the names of all the member counties. The United Nations Plaza is also the site of the weekly, Heart of the City farmers market.
