The American Conservatory Theater, Theater District
The 1,000-seat Geary Theater was built in 1909 and is considered a national historic monument. In 1967 the American Conservatory Theater Company moved into the building and, as one of San Francisco's first year-round resident theater companies, crafted a second-to-none reputation that boasted productions from nearly every major playwright of the past century. A.C.T. is both a theater company and drama school. Among its many notable alumni are Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Winona Ryder, Benjamin Bratt, Nicolas Cage, Carlos Bernard, Amy Irving, Rene Auberjonois, Peter Donat, Richard Dysart, Michael Learned, Wynn Harmon, Elizabeth Banks, Marsha Mason, Kitty Winn, Danny Glover, Milo Ventimiglia, and Anika Noni Rose. The Geary Theater underwent a $28.5 million state-of-the-art technology renovation and in 2006 was renamed the American Conservatory Theater.
