Vintage Taxi Cab, San Francisco
While not unique today, San Francisco was the first city in the United States to use hybrid taxis. The Yellow Cab Cooperative, the city's largest taxi company, was the first to roll out the fuel-efficient vehicles. San Francisco's taxi history dates before 1904 when the first 'Hackman's Union' was formed. Today there are no less than 36 taxi companies operating within San Francisco's seven mile by seven mile city limits. With a city this small the fare doesn't usually climb too high. One exception was a ride given by local cabbie, Brad Newsham who drove Tony Tocdaan from San Francisco to Washington D.C. with the meter running. Their trip included a radio interview by NPR and a VIP White House tour. The final fare at the end of the trip, $20,644.90.
