Mini Series, Safari West, Day 1 of 3
About an hour north of San Francisco are the sprawling grounds of Safari West, a 400-acre wildlife preserve, home to hundreds exotic mammals and birds. Located just north of Santa Rosa in Sonoma, the preserve offers visitors two-hour safari jeep guided tours through their grounds. In addition to the jeep tours, Safari West also offers walking tours through their enclosures for smaller animals. The preserve sponsors the Safari West Wildlife Foundation, a research and educational nonprofit organization. Beyond education and research, the preserve also serves as breeding grounds for such rare and endangered species as the scimitar-horned oryx and the cheetah, shown above.
