Stinson Beach, as seen from across the lagoon in Bolinas
For two towns right next to each other Bolinas and Stinson Beach couldn't be more different. Separated by only a few hundred yards of Bolinas Lagoon, the median family income of Sinson Beach is more than double that of Bolinas. Bolinas is proud of its reputation as the prototypical hippie beach town, filled with artists, poets, commune families, and other independent souls. Stinson Beach, on the other hand, is a popular destination beach for San Franciscans and a preferred site for the second homes - large multi-million dollar beachfront estates, dramatized by Sharon Stone's Beach house in Basic Instinct. But Bolinas and Stinson Beach maintain a friendly rivalry that is highlighted by an annual tug-of-war across Bolinas Lagoon between the two towns on July 4th. The unusual and popular event featuring hundreds of townspeople kicks off both town's Independence Day festivities.
