San Francisco Neighborhoods
For a small city that's only seven miles by seven miles, there certainly are a lot of different places in San Francisco. By my count there are over 120 distinctly-named neighborhoods in the city (am I missing any?). The better known districts such as Chinatown, the Mission, Marina, Sunset, and Richmond are sub-divided into individual and proudly-defined neighborhoods. While the distance between Presidio Heights and Laurel Heights might be just a block or two, and the division invisible to most visitors, the distinction is absolute to residents and relators. The difference between Upper Haight and Lower Haight is perceived as great as that between Montana and Mississippi. To suggest that someone's home in Pacific Heights is actually located in Lower Pacific Heights might result in black eye. With so many named neighborhoods what's one more? I'm thinking we should all start calling the scenic lookout above Fort Point in the Presidio, FogBay Heights. Whadda say, who's going to notice?
