A Clear Day, Point Reyes National Seashore
With its 70,000 acres and miles of nearly deserted beaches, Point Reyes National Seashore is a pretty cool place. Statistically speaking, it's the coolest place in the continental U.S. Not because of any frigid winters, but because of the constant wind. Point Reyes holds national record for wind duration: 365 days a year, at twenty-three miles an hour. Along with the wind comes the Pacific fog, Point Reyes is also the second-foggiest spot in the U.S. In fact this seashore was used in the opening scene of the 1980 film, The Fog, in which citizens of the town of Point Reyes are terrorized by ghosts of shipwrecked sailors wielding meat hooks. Wind, fog, killer ghosts? I guess we know why the beaches are deserted.
