Stockton Tunnel, Off Union Square
The Stockton Tunnel near downtown actually separates three different neighborhoods. On this near side is the toney shopping district of Union Square, on the far side you emerge into the heart of Chinatown, and above the tunnel sits the heights of exclusive Nob Hill. The tunnel, completed in 1914, was one of the 200 'Oriental labor tunnels' dug in California. The result of the toil of this indentured labor force was to give the residents of, then rural, North Beach access to the downtown. The Stockton Tunnel has also been a plot device in many films including The Game, Freebie and the Bean, Hearts and Souls, and The Bachelor.
