The Spirit of Isadora Duncan
Isadora Duncan was born in San Francisco in 1877 and at age six she announced to her mother that she was a dancer and a revolutionary. As a child Isadora would dance for hours on San Francisco beaches where she explored the unconventional movements that would later make her world famous. While her dancing career began in San Francisco, it was in Europe where her revolutionary work made her a legend. Isadora's lifestyle was as unorthodox as her art, scandalizing many with her wild romantic adventures, spiritual writings, and free living. Her dramatic and tragic death at age 50 in Nice, France came just after uttering her famous final words, "Adieu, mes amis. Je vais à la gloire!" ("Goodbye, my friends, I am off to glory!"). Today she is generally recognized as the creator of modern dance, glory indeed.
