Tidal Marsh, Crissy Field
Crissy Field has been a lot of things; seasonal home to the Ohlone Indians, an historic army airfield, a Grand Prix raceway, and a Coast Guard Station. While airplane military hangars dating back to the 1920s still border Crissy Field, the majority of this 100-acre urban park as been converted from asphalt to newly-restored natural dunes and shoreline. Crissy Field's community-driven restoration, completed in 2000, also includes a 28-acre grassy meadow and this public promenade whose small bridge passes over the lush new tidal marsh. As part of the restoration over 100,000 native plants representing 110 species were planted around the site. Since the restoration, naturalists have identified 17 species of fish and 135 species of birds enjoying the new tidal marsh.
