It has been said that there is only one conversation in the Bay Area – home prices. With four of the top eight richest cities in the United States, the Bay Area has some of the very highest home prices in the country. But like the rest of the country the area has seen its home prices dip in the last few months. That means the average price for a home is now down around $875k in San Francisco. For a home like the one shown above, figure on paying about five times that much, and don't forget to add another $50k a year for property taxes. And San Francisco isn't even the most expensive housing county in the Bay Area.

Recently there have been some indicators that home demand here has started to rise again, but probably won't reach the levels of real estate buying frenzy of 2000 and 2001. Back then it was common for home sellers to receive multiple bids of 10% to 40% above their asking price, some bids coming before the house was shown or even listed.
