Good Crack, de Young Museum Courtyard
Environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy is known for using natural materials and creating works that lie just slightly beyond the realm of what is possible in nature. In 2003 he was asked to develop a site-specific work that could be incorporated into the new de Young Museum. This permanent installation, Drawn Stone was inspired by San Francisco's underlying tectonic plates. A small, seemingly random crack runs from the street, up the main walkway into the museum's courtyard where it splits eight large stones in half, and then continues up to the main entrance door. The split stones, which also serve as seating in the courtyard, come orginally from the artist's native Yorkshire, England.
