Lighthouse, Marin Coast
Marin County, just North of San Francisco, has been welcoming visitors for a long, long time. In 1579, when Sir Francis Drake arrived on the Marin shores he was greeted by the coastal Miwok Indians. Drake had left England two years earlier with a fleet of five ships but by the time he reached Marin only the Golden Hinde, his flagship, remained. He named this new land Nova Albion, Latin for New England. His log also records that he left a large, engraved "Plate of Brasse" to mark his landing. While fake brass markers have surfaced over time, the real article has yet to be discovered. Beachcombers in Marin keep their eyes open in hopes of becoming the one to discover this true historical treasure.
