Hyphy, The New San Francisco Sound
The original 'San Francisco Sound' came from Bay Area rock bands in the late 1960s and early 1970s. These included Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and Big Brother & the Holding Company. But a new San Francisco sound has recently hit mainstream America, Hyphy. Hyphy, a mashup of hype, hyper, and fly, started around 2000 when Bay Area hip-hop artists began developing gritty, pounding sound with a hyperactive beat. Hyphy, much like Southern Crunk, extends into dress, dance, cars, all types of culture. It's a lifestyle. Bay Area artists associated with Hyphy include E-40, Keak Da Sneak, Mac Dre, The Federation, Too $hort, and others. with the growing national attention, the Hyphy movement has certainly injected energy into the hip-hop community of the San Francisco "Yay Area."
