Cupid Span, Rincon Park
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen are known for witty, giant-scale public sculptures. Their 2003, 60-foot Cupid's Span which sits on the grass next to San Francisco's Bay is no exception. Obviously symbolizing love, they bury the arrow's point deep into the ground to honor peace. The resulting vertical arrow and bow strings mirror the city's bridge cables and the curving bow suggests the form a sailing ship from the Bay's past. Finally according to a statement by the artists, "The feathers which are most free, most elaborate, and most colorful suggest the birds soaring along the waterfront." Um, OK.
