Ayala Cove, Angel Island
The largest island in San Francisco Bay is the beautiful and historic state park, Angel Island. Situated in the middle of the Bay, the island offers spectacular views from its 740 unspoiled acres and its 788 foot high, Mount Livermore. Cars are not allowed on the island but there are over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, and camping is a very popular activity here. Above, a group of overnight campers disembark from a ferry onto the island's Ayala Cove dock. It was at this cove in 1775 that the first European ship to enter the Bay, anchored. For those wanting to take the three mile paddle from San Francisco, Angel Island is also kayak-accessible.
