The Rainbow Flag first made its appearance at the Gay Pride Parade in 1978. Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker, the flag's original eight stripes represented the eight components of a community; harmony, art, nature, life, etc. The rainbow imagery was chosen as it is applied to many myths and stories related to gender and sexuality issues in Greek, Native American, African, and other cultures. Later the flag's stripes were reduced to just six. The flag soon spread from San Francisco and today the Rainbow Flag is officially recognized as the symbol of gay pride and diversity worldwide.
