The F Word, The Embarcadero
Over the years San Francisco has had a number of nicknames, Everyone's Favorite City, The Western Gate, Baghdad by the Bay, The City of Hills, The Wickedest Town on Earth, Shaky Town, The Garden of Eden, The Golden Gate City, The Barbary Coast, The Instant City, The Melting Pot, The Capital of the Pacific, or simply The City. However one nickname that is anathema to most San Franciscans is 'Frisco'. Legendary columnist Herb Caen often railed against that moniker and it was even opposed as far back as 1907 when the ladies of the Outdoor Art League formed an Anti-Frisco Committee to discourage the use of the word. The single exception to the prohibition on the word Frisco is Otis Redding's 'Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.'
