Sun Yat-Sen Monument, St. Mary's Square
This 12 foot metal statue in the Middle of St. Mary's Square honors the memory of Sun Yat-Sen (Sun Zhongshan), revered as, "National Father" the founder of modern China for his involvement with the 1911 Wuchang Revolution which put an end to over 2000 years imperial Chinese rule. Dr. Sun lived in here for a number of years during his political exile and wrote the Chinese constitution in a Chinatown hotel where he was staying. He came to San Francisco, the largest Chinese city outside Asia, to rally support and raise money for his overthrow of the Qing emperor. During his life he promoted the notion of friendship and peace among all nations based on equality, justice, and goodwill.
