Haas-Lilienthal House, Pacific Heights
There are over 14,000 intricate and colorful Victorian style houses in San Francisco. They are made mostly of redwood due to the fact that it resists rot, termites, and fire. Additionally, unlike brick, stone, and other woods, redwood is easy to carve making the architectural details and trim easier to produce. Finally, redwood was cheap and plentiful at the time the city was being built. This one, the Haas-Lilienthal House was built in 1886 in the Queen Anne-style. This house is larger than many Victorians, whose typical footprint is 25 feet wide, 100 feet deep, and three stories tall, to match the parcel size of the 1860s home associations. Most Victorians feature bay windows because the shape of them allows more light on our foggy days.
