John's Grill, Downtown
"Chops, baked potato, and sliced tomatoes", Sam Spade orders at John's Grill in The Maltese Falcon. Dashiell Hammett's detective lived on Post Street but John's Grill was his favorite hangout. Hammett was himself a detective in San Francisco, working for the Pinkerton agency, before turning to crime fiction. Hammett wrote over 85 short stories and novels including The Thin Man and The Glass Key. Sam Spade's legacy still walks the city, in Burritt Alley, above the Stockton Tunnel, a plaque commemorates that site where Spade's partner, Miles Archer was killed by a .38 slug.
