Coffee Break, Market Street
In the late 1800s San Francisco was the coffee capital of the world. As a port unloading ships arriving from the orient and South America, a number of coffee companies sprung up. The Folgers brothers turned from gold mining to coffee roasting at the same time the Hills bothers started packing theirs here in vacuum tins. Back then passengers arriving on ferries from across the bay were able to smell the aroma of coffee before the ferries even landed. So its not surprising that Irish Coffee was started here as well. Even Starbuck's draws its heritage from the legendary Peet's coffee, across the bay in Berkeley. Peet's, the "grandfather of specialty coffee" was the inspiration for Starbucks. The three original founders of Starbucks either worked for or knew Alfred Peet. In fact, during their first year of business Starbuck's bought their beans from Peet's. Today there are well over 300 coffee houses packed into San Francisco's seven by seven miles.
