Dairy Herd, Marin County
Don't tell Wisconsin but California is the largest milk producing state in the country. Also the largest producer of butter, ice cream, and cheese. Marin County, just north of the Golden Gate has 50 percent of its land devoted to farms or ranches. Surprising high for a county adjacent to such major city. The majority of these farms are considered small or mini-farms and are third- and fourth-generation family owned operations, including 159 livestock farms. Responding to the bay area's demand for healthier food most of these cattle farms focus on organic, grass-feeding, and sustainable farming. So the next time you're driving through Marin, heading to the Wine Country, consider stopping here and picking up some cheese for the trip.
