The England to France Chunnel? Big deal, the Bay Area Rapid Transport System, or BART, was an engineering marvel built 25 years earlier. The central feature of the mass transit train system is a 3.7 mile long tube that lays on the floor of the San Francisco Bay, connecting San Francisco to Oakland. The tube, 135 feet under the water, was so well designed that riders during the 7.1 magnitude, 1989 earthquake riders were not even aware of the motion. Today the BART system spans 104 miles, has 43 stations, carries over 95 million people annually, and has a fleet of 670 train cars, not counting the one above.
