Point Bonita Lighthouse, Marin Headlands
The Point Bonita lighthouse has been guiding ships from the north shore of the Golden Gate for over 150 years. Before the lighthouse, the fog signal was a cannon, fired every half hour in foggy weather. Later a 1500 pound mechanical bell warned sailors of the rocky coast. The lighthouse, sitting 260 feet above the ocean, was installed in 1855. The original lens, made up of 125 lead glass prisms, is still in use and the beacon can be seen for 18 miles in clear weather. In foggy weather the lighthouse's foghorn signature is two blasts every 30 seconds. The half-mile path down to the lighthouse is highlighted by an ancient, wooden suspension bridge, that cannot support more than two persons at a time, stretched over a 100 foot drop.
