First Light, on the Embarcadero
The Embarcadero is a six mile stretch on San Francisco's eastern waterfront. It starts at the Giant's ballpark in China Basin then stretches north past the Bay Bridge, downtown, and up into Fisherman's Wharf. Until the late 1950s the Embarcadero was a busy pier where hundreds of sail and steam ships unloaded their cargo. In 1958 an ugly two-story freeway was built over the Embarcadero by the State Division of Highways. But much to every San Franciscan's delight the 1989 earthquake caused enough damage to force the demolition of the freeway. Today the Embarcadero is a beautiful palm tree-lined boulevard with trolley tracks running down the center. The shipping industry has given way to a farmer's produce market, lots of new restaurants, hotels, and office workers jogging during their lunches.
