Morning Row, Aquatic Park
Adjacent to the bustle of Fisherman's Wharf is the natural serenity of Aquatic Park, a quarter-mile sandy beach and grassy lawn along the northern waterfront. The park was built as a WPA project in 1937 and includes a 1,850 foot long curving pier that is popular with joggers and bikers. The stonework in the pier came from an abandoned cemetery from the 1800s. The Aquatic Park also marks the beginning of the swimming leg of the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. The swim out to Alcatraz Island is an icy 1.5 miles long. The triathlon also includes a 14 mile bike ride and a 13 mile run through San Francisco.
