North End Police Station, Cow Hollow
Even the police stations are beautiful in Cow Hollow. In the 1860s there were 30 dairy farms on the north end of San Francisco in an area dubbed 'Cow Hollow'. Along with the dairy farms, there were slaughterhouses, tanneries, and the accompanying odors associated with such businesses. The affluent residents of Pacific Heights, uphill and downwind, complained and not surprisingly, soon the lagoon and springs that watered the livestock were filled in and the cattle and stench disappeared. Today the area is far different, reborn as a pricey shopping district filled with trendy and upscale boutiques, restaurants and bars that are popular with post-college singles. However, you can still spot glimpses of the neighborhood's bovine past in some of the barns and carriage house tucked in behind the million-dollar Victorians that fill Cow Hollow.
