Forbes Island, Pier 39
Forbes Island off Fisherman's Wharf isn't an island but instead a self-propelled vessel. Created by Forbes Thor Kiddoo as a floating home in 1975, the 700 ton, 50 by 100 foot 'island' contains live palm trees, a beach, a lighthouse, and a waterfall. Beneath the waterline, is a dining room, bar, wine cellar and two staterooms. The belowdecks are often compared to a Victorian version of Captain Nemo's submarine. Forbes Island was previously docked in Sausalito, Point Richmond, and Antioch. Today, open to the public and docked in San Francisco, near the sea lions off Pier 39, Forbes Island is available for dining, weddings, parties, and can seat up to 65 people. Forbes Island is the only restaurant in the city that requires a that you take a boat to arrive.
