Tosca Cafe, Columbus Street
'Legendary Bar' is a term too often used and should only be reserved for places like the Tosca Cafe. Established in 1919, near the corner of Broadway and Columbus, it's a chic '30s cocktail bar that never changed. The bar features large, antique espresso machines, the original red vinyl booths, and a jukebox that plays opera. Bar regulars, Sean Penn, Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage, and Sam Sheperd usually head for the private room in the back. But occasionally Johnny Depp can be spotted throwing down at the bar and then there's memorable evenings such as when Robert Duvall tangoed across the floor all night. Tosca is one of Bono's favorite bars, so much so that he opened a bar of the same name in Dublin, which his brother runs. You might not be a star, but you'll be welcome here. Drinking a sidecar at the Tosca while savoring the atmosphere and lack of pretension will make feel like a regular yourself.
