Goddess of Freedom, Portsmouth Square
The Goddess of Freedom, a replica of the statue raised in Tiananmen Square, was erected in Portsmouth Square on June 1994 five years after the democracy movement was put down in the Beijing massacre. Prior to construction, the Consul General of the People's Republic of China had sent a letter to then-mayor Art Agnos protesting the statue. Agnos and San Francisco ignored the protest and erected the statue. On September 1996, during a demonstration by groups supporting the Communist government of China, the protestors covered the statue with tarp and scaffolding. But the statue was soon uncovered and stands today in the park on the edge of Chinatown.
