Peace Pagoda, Japantown
Japantown's most recognizable landmark is the majestic, 110 foot Peace Pagoda. Designed by Tokyo's Yoshiro Taniguchi, the five-tiered pagoda was modeled after those in the city of Nara, more than 1200 years ago. It was donated to the city in 1968 by San Francisco's sister city, Osaka. Originally, the five copper top roofs rose from a reflecting fish pond and the structure housed an eternal flame from a Osaka shrine. After a 2000 renovation some of these features were eliminated.
