San Francisco Marriott, Downtown
Possibly the most un-San Franciscan structure in the entire city is the San Francisco Marriott. In a city that prides itself on aesthetics and taste the "Giant Jukebox" was controversial from the day it was announced. Many asked what would allowing the construction of such a gaudy building do to the city? The developers dismissed the many complaints and protests as simply over-reactions. Eventually the Marriott had its grand opening on October 17, 1989. At 5:01 that same day the devastating 7.2 magnitude Loma Prieta Earthquake hit San Francisco cutting off electricity to the hotel and all its guests.
