Gun Emplacement, Battery Godfrey
The mouth of the Golden Gate was once protected by dozens of now-empty military batteries. Battery Godfrey in the Presidio was typical with its 30 foot thick walls of angled, reinforced concrete, protecting three large guns. Due to their location, these abandoned batteries offer some of the most awe-inspiring views of the bay. During the 1950s eleven Nike missile sites were installed along the Golden Gate. One site nestled in the low coastal hills of Marin County is the only one of the country's original 300 Nike sites still preserved in its historic appearance.
