Outside Coit Tower, Telegraph Hill
Rising 210 feet above San Francisco Coit Tower was a gift to the city from Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who after being rescued from a burning building in 1851 at the age of of seven became fascinated with firemen. As a teenager she would ride along to fires with her favorite Knickerbocker Hose Company No. 5. Later Coit would rebel against Victorian society by often dressing as a man, smoking, drinking, and playing poker with dock workers. She died at 86 years old, leaving a bequest of $125,000 to build a tower to honor her firefighting friends.
