Hangars, Hamilton
Hamilton airfield was originally designed and operated as a bomber installation beginning in 1932. But as bombers became larger and their runway needs became longer the base turned into a fighter base. Finally vacated by the U.S. military in 1995, the base was reinvented into a residential housing development. The old bomber hangars were rebuilt as commercial space including a public library and YMCA, the runways will be flooded and turned into protected wetlands for waterfowl. While the Coast Guard still maintains an active strike force here the bombers and fighter jets have given way to baby strollers and cafes. If it looks familiar it may be because Hamilton served as the location for the film, 'The Right Stuff'.
